Other friction products that use mullite are brake linings and clutch facings. Mullite imparts the right amount of abrasion (friction) to the products so that they have relatively long lives and do not “lock-up”. Almost all brake linings used in railroad vehicles and in large trucks contain from 50 to over 80% mullite.
