SLEDGEHAMMERS,
WHEELBARROWS AND MULES HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY STATE-OF-THE ART
TECHNOLOGY
Guy
Dixon is President and General Manager of Kyanite Mining Corporation,
which has been a family-owned and operated business since his
grandfather bought the original mine out of bankruptcy in 1948.
“In
the earliest days — before my time — our
mining equipment consisted of sledgehammers, wheelbarrows and
mules,” says
Gene Dixon Jr.
In
the 1940’s the company employed less than 15 people
and mined approximately 300 tons of ore per month. Today, KMC’s
two quarries and five processing plants employ 150 individuals
-- in an around-the-clock operation that has the capacity to
produce over 150,000 tons of commercial grade kyanite concentrate
a year.
In 2006, KMC began quarrying dimensional blocks to be used as stone countertops as well as in other residential and commercial applications. Kyanite Dimensional Stone is used by stone fabricators around the globe to produce the world’s only dimensional stone products containing kyanite crystals. The kyanite provides the finished slabs not only with inherent strength and heat resistance, but also a dramatic visual presence and exotic allure.
Like our mountains, Kyanite Mining Corporation stands
strong, stable and resilient. Like the mountains, we are here
to stay.
