Welcome to the Fall Newsletter!
Crisp days, changing leaves, and a milestone year—it’s fall at KMC! From international trade shows to celebrating 80 years of operations right here in Dillwyn, we’ve got a lot to share this season. Here’s a look at what’s happening:
For eight decades, Kyanite Mining Corporation has proudly served as a trusted leader in producing the world’s highest-quality kyanite and mullite.
As we mark our 80th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the key moments, innovations, and people who have shaped our journey.

Have you checked out our two-part Specialty Products blog series?
Alongside our flagship Virginia Kyanite® and Virginia Mullite®, we produce specialty grades designed for niche applications. They make up a small percentage of production but often deliver outsized results—solving challenges in refractories, ceramics, and investment casting.

At KMC, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Meet Calvin Wallace, our IT Manager since 2014 and the self-proclaimed “computer guy” who keeps our tech running smoothly. Fun fact: Calvin is also the resident chef of the office!
What do you enjoy most about your work at KMC?
I really enjoy the variety—no two days are the same. Whether it's troubleshooting unexpected issues or streamlining systems to better support our users and infrastructure, there's always a new challenge to tackle. It keeps the work dynamic and rewarding.
What’s your favorite part of each workday?
Starting the day is the best because no two problems are the same. I must prioritize on what is critical to operations first and keep the users as happy as possible. 😊
In your opinion, what makes Kyanite Mining Corporation unique?
I have never worked anywhere where people have been employed longer than I have been alive! The amount of work skill and knowledge (and droves of data) is astounding and continues to grow over the years. KMC is the only kyanite mine in North America, its commitment to environmental stewardship inspires, and has just reached its 80th year in operation. I’m proud to be a part of it!
What’s something about your job that might surprise people?
What makes the role so interesting is how multi-layered it is. With today’s mix of tech—from advanced systems to older tools—you’re constantly navigating different worlds across production, sales, and network communications technologies.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Tech and gaming have always been a natural fit in my life. I’ve long been the go-to computer guy and a gamer at heart—it just clicks. Whether I’m building PCs, exploring virtual worlds, or teaming up with friends online, it’s where curiosity and creativity come together. Outside the digital space, I recharge by hitting the gym, playing disc golf, experimenting in the kitchen, or just enjoying good company. It’s a fun mix of virtual and real-world hobbies that keeps life fresh and balanced.
A big thank-you to Calvin, whose work behind the scenes makes sure this newsletter reaches you!
