R&D at KMC: Supporting Our Customers

At Kyanite Mining Corporation, research and development starts with a simple idea: support the people doing the work.

That might mean solving a problem, improving a mix, or better understanding how a material performs in real-world conditions. However it shows up, the goal is the same—helping our customers succeed..

A big part of that comes from staying connected with our customers. Through conversations, site visits, and ongoing collaboration, we gain a clearer understanding of how kyanite is being used and where challenges exist. That insight directly informs how we approach our R&D efforts.

As KMC Vice President Steven Ashlock shares, “It’s called research and development because it takes time and many iterations—real progress comes from what we learn along the way.”

Not every test goes as planned—and that’s part of the process. Each study builds on what we know, helping both our team and our customers make more informed decisions over time.

Working Side by Side

Every customer brings a different starting point.

Some have advanced facilities and technical teams. Others are looking for support—whether that’s access to testing, help evaluating an idea, or simply a second opinion.

Wherever they’re starting from, we work alongside them. Sometimes that means hands on involvement. Other times, it means talking through ideas or helping validate an approach.

What matters most is the partnership—sharing knowledge, asking the right questions, and working toward better outcomes together.

Our customers are often the first to encounter new challenges. Working closely with them helps us stay current—not just on their needs, but on the broader industry shifts.

Changes in fuel sources, operating conditions, and performance expectations all impact refractory materials. For example, the shift toward alternative fuels like hydrogen is already changing what refractories are expected to handle.

By staying connected, we’re better equipped to respond—adapting as demands evolve and continuing to learn alongside our customers.

Supporting Customers Around the World

For customers without access to advanced testing—or those newer to working with our products—this kind of partnership can make a meaningful difference.

Sometimes we’re refining a mix. Sometimes we’re troubleshooting an issue. And sometimes we’re simply helping someone think through a problem.

Not every solution involves our product, and that’s okay. The goal is to help customers find what works.
