Safety at KMC: Building a Culture of Safety
Many of our employees have deep roots in Buckingham County. We know each other's families, celebrate milestones together, and look out for one another. That same mindset carries into the way we approach safety at Kyanite Mining Corporation.
Training
At the heart of our safety program is a commitment to ensuring every employee has the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to work safely. Through ongoing education, hands-on instruction, and regulatory compliance, we strive to create a culture where safety remains a shared responsibility and a daily priority.
Every new employee completes three full days of safety training before entering the mine, establishing a strong foundation for safe work practices from day one. After onboarding, employees continue their education through monthly safety training sessions held throughout the year.
Safety Director John Snoddy and his team lead these training sessions multiple times during each month’s safety week, allowing employees from different plants and shifts to participate. This flexible approach helps ensure that every team member receives consistent, up-to-date safety instruction.
In addition to monthly training, we hold our annual Summer Safety School each June. During this program, employees can make up any training they may have missed.
We also offer CPR and first aid certification courses, and employees in specialized roles, including foremen, complete additional training specific to their responsibilities.
At our operation, training is more than a requirement. It is an investment in our people. By providing ongoing education and reinforcing safe work practices throughout the year, we help ensure every employee has the knowledge and confidence to perform their job safely and return home to their families at the end of each day.
